Kenya’s Mercy Nyachama triumphed at the 2025 Uganda Ladies Golf Open after a dramatic sudden-death playoff at the par-71 Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club on Saturday.

Nyachama, from Njoro Country Club in Nakuru, claimed her first title on Ugandan soil after years of trying since 2017.

She carded 78, 75, and 77 for a total of 230 strokes, tying with Tanzania’s Neema Olomi, who shot 73, 80, and 77.

With the two locked after 54 holes, the playoff was decided on the par-3 hole 8. Both made par on the first attempt, but on the second, Nyachama stayed composed to make par while Olomi bogeyed, sealing the Kenyan’s maiden title.

“I feel honoured for this victory,” Nyachama said after receiving her trophy from Uganda Ladies Golf Union chairperson Rita Akol Apell. “I came in early to study the course, and that really helped me.”

Uganda’s Martha Babirye finished third with 233 strokes, Kenya’s Ashley Awuor placed fourth on 234, and defending champion Iddy Madina Hussein of Tanzania settled for fifth with 242.

The three-day event drew some of the region’s best female golfers, with Nyachama’s win highlighting her persistence and resilience.

The Uganda Golf Open series continues next week with the 84th Amateur Open, set for September 3 to 6 at the same venue.
