The 2025 Masaza Cup has been launched with a significant growth from the 2024 season, as it was revealed by the Minister of Sports and Arts, Robert Sserwanga.
The launch was held at Bulange in Mengo on 18th June 2025 with Masaza leaders and team managers in attendance for the event.
In the minister’s report, the Masaza cup 2024 got a 70,000 growth of spectators to reach 385,000 from 315,000 that attended Masaza cup games in 2023.
In the same report minister also disclosed that the Masaza Cup is a key centre in employing Ugandans shooting to 500 players, 217 officials and 4,500 service providers per Matchday, coming to a total of 650,000 beneficiaries in the entire season.
The launch was chief-guested by the Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, who launched the 21st edition after remarks where he allocated the change of the notion in the sports industry.
“In the past, people were counties sports only for those who fails in studies but the notion has changed and the FUFA chief executive officer Edgar Watson is one of the remarkable example being a graduate doesn’t stop him from going on and captain the biggest club in the country SC Villa and National football team Uganda Cranes. Now days football is beyond enjoyment, but it carries many financial resources. Kabaka wants us to develop sports in Buganda deliberately and with that, we came to a motion of registering Masaza Cup teams as clubs and also start constructing stadiums in all Masaza (18).”
On the 21st edition, the Katikiro called team managers to stop the acts of believing in witchcraft and drop all other indisciplines for the growth of the competition. “I argue Masaza Cup team managers to stop believing in witchcraft because witchcraft can’t win a football match, it is discipline which can make you win a game but believing that witchcraft can make you win a match is stupidity.”
Katikiro finished his remarks by handing over Jerseys designed by I&Q to Buddu and Gomba ahead of the opening match on 21st June 2025 at Kitovu Sports Arena.
The event was attended by key personnel from Masaza Cup partners, including Airtel Uganda, Kansai Plascon, UNAIDS and Century Bank, while FUFA was represented by CEO Edgar Watson.
