The Plascon Mongers defeated the Rhinos in Entebbe to go third on the National Rugby Championship table after winning 21-16.

The Mongers came back from 7-3 down in the first half to claim a 9-7 halftime lead thanks to two penalties and a drop goal from masterful kicker Robin Odrua.

The second half was another battle of kickers, Odrua adding four penalties for the Mongers, while Ivan Kirabo kicked in three for the visiting Rhinos.

The Rhinos thought they had a chance to win it with the last play of the game, grounding close to the poles but the referee called back the play, citing a forward pass in the buildup, and called the game at 21-16 for the Mongers.

The Mongers now climb ahead of the Pirates and KOBs into third after the two sides succumbed to losses. Pirates were held scoreless at Kyadondo, losing 11-00 to the Toyota Buffaloes, while the KOBs lost to eternal foes Heathens 25-13 at home.

The Rhinos now drop to seventh, just 5 points ahead of Walukuba Barbarians (who defeated the Warriors 23-09), and are starting to flirt with the relegation zone with only three games left in the regular season.

The Kampani’s Eagles gave themselves a chance to believe, with a 32-22 win against Impis to go above them on 9 points, still eight behind Barbarians in eighth.

Barring a miracle in the next three weeks, Lifeguard Rams are confirmed for the relegation battle, sitting rock bottom on the table on 5 points after eight outings, with their latest defeat coming at the hands of the Jinja Hippos, who beat them 37-16.
