Uganda Cup R16 | Tuesday Results
- Lugazi FC 0-1 SC Villa
- BUL FC 7-0 Total FC
SC Villa secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lugazi FC in the Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 16, thanks to Reagan Mpande’s decisive second-half goal in a tightly contested match at Najjembe on Tuesday evening.
With this win, the Jogoos not only booked their place in the quarterfinals of the 51st edition of the tournament but also ended Lugazi’s unbeaten run in the competition.
Before this match, Lugazi had kept two clean sheets, but Villa’s resilience saw them concede for the first time in this year’s campaign.
The game began with Lugazi showing early attacking intent. Hussein Ssenonga forced a save from Meddie Kibirige, while Frank Mulimi’s powerful effort was kept out by goalkeeper Matovu.
Aslam Ssemakula also failed to capitalize on a defensive mishap, missing a crucial opportunity to put his side ahead.
SC Villa had their own share of missed chances. A glaring mistake by Juma Mutebi gifted Sula Matovu a golden opportunity with an open net, but he couldn’t convert.
Early in the second half, Francis Onekalit thought he had broken the deadlock for Villa, only for his goal to be ruled out for offside.
The breakthrough finally came in the 53rd minute when Mpande took advantage of a defensive mix-up to slot home the game’s only goal.
Lugazi had a late opportunity to equalize when substitute Ian Amannya was set up by Sharif Saaka, but his effort failed to hit the target.
With their third consecutive victory, SC Villa now joins fellow Uganda Premier League sides Kitara, BUL FC, and Police FC in the quarter-finals.
The other game on the day saw BUL put up a seven-star performance against Total FC with a 7-0 win to advance to the Quarterfinal stage.
The 51st edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, co-sponsored by Plascon Uganda, is not just a fight for silverware but also serves as a platform for young players to showcase their skills.
