MUBS assistant coach Ali Zzinda has defended his side’s unconvincing display in their 1-0 victory over YMCA, which qualified them for the quarterfinals of the University Football League.

“Our target was to go past the group stages since our target is to win this season’s title,” Zzinda said.

“We haven’t played as well as the fans would have anticipated, but the good thing is that we won since we wanted to qualify to the next round. We shall try to rectify our mistakes before we play our next game.”

Thomas Lasu‘s fifth-minute penalty was the difference between the two sides.

The victory saw MUBS move to 13 points, four ahead of second-placed Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU). YMCA are third with four points, while Victoria are bottom with two points.

YMCA coach Michael Kalyesubula believes that the early goal they conceded after their plan to defend deep backfired.

“We conceded an early penalty which cost us,” Kalyesubula said.

“We failed to bounce back despite having some chances we failed to convert. We have good players but we didn’t have a good start and this affected us. But we shall try our level best to win our last game.”
