As the countdown to CHAN 2024 gathers pace, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has moved to fortify Uganda’s technical bench by officially appointing Fred Muhumuza and Morley Byekwaso to steer preparations for the Uganda Cranes’ campaign.

The duo will be at the heart of the build-up to the African Nations Championship (CHAN), which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania from August 2 to August 30, 2025, under the “Pamoja East Africa” initiative.

Muhumuza and Byekwaso will operate under the guidance of Uganda Cranes Head Coach Paul Put, who retains overall technical control of the team during the tournament.

The appointment of Muhumuza and Byekwaso signals a strategic approach by FUFA, with the two coaches already familiar with the national team setup.

The pair previously worked together on an interim basis during the October 2023 international friendlies against Mali and Zambia, shortly after the departure of Milutin “Micho” Sredojević.

CHAN, unlike the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is a tournament restricted to players featuring in their respective domestic leagues, making it a vital platform for local talent to shine on the continental stage.

With Uganda playing on home soil, expectations are high for the Cranes to make a serious impact.

FUFA also revealed that the rest of the technical team will be announced after the final squad selection.

All eyes will now be on Muhumuza and Byekwaso to rally the best from Uganda’s domestic league and mould a competitive side worthy of the occasion.
