Muni University coach Ronnie Atiku was disappointed with his team’s 1-1 draw against Ndejje University, which saw them miss out on a chance to qualify for the knockout stage of the University Football League.

“We lost the chance of qualifying to the next stage,” Atiku said.

“But we are still a new young team and I believe we will be better next season. We came with zeal to win the game but things couldn’t work out. I know there was also a bit of fatigue among my boys.”

“The pitch was also slippery and we failed to hold on to the ball well. The fact that our goalkeeper also got injured it also affected us.”

Muni took the lead in the 29th minute through Benjamin Jawambe, but Ronald Ssemaganda equalized for Ndejje in the 56th minute.

Ndejje captain Christopher Hashakimanya revealed that the loss of their coach, Timothy Komakech, who passed away last week after suffering from kidney problems, contributed to their performance.

“We have not been training well this week because we have been down due to the death of our coach,” Hashakimanya said.

“But we got the point for our coach. By the time we shall face Makerere we should have finalized burial arrangements and so we shall be in good shape. We believe we shall win the tie against Makerere.”

The result saw Makerere remain top of Group C with six points while Muni is second with two points. Ndejje is bottom, also with two points. Kyambogo was the other side in the group but they were suspended for two years over hooliganism.

The league will resume on Saturday as International University of East Africa (IUEA) takes on Gulu in Lukuli, Makindye.
