Uganda’s Gloria Muzito set a new National Record in the Women’s 100m freestyle, clocking an impressive 55.95 seconds at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.
Muzito had previously set the National Record at 56.01 seconds earlier this year while securing a bronze medal at the African Games in Ghana.
However, despite her record-breaking swim, Muzito faced tough competition in her Olympic debut.
Her performance on the day was not good enough to see her progress to the semifinals but she remains optimistic of further improvements in the upcoming races.
She finished at the bottom of Heat Four, which was won by Singapore’s Tokyo silver medalist, Siobhan Bernadette Haughey.
Across all four heats, Muzito’s time placed her 22nd out of 29 athletes, with only the top 16 advancing to the semifinals.
Uganda’s other swimmer Jesse Ssengonzi is also yet to compete and will be taking to the Pool on Friday in the 100m Butterfly.
It should be noted that Uganda paint manufacturing giants Kansai Plascon through their “Twaake” (meaning “Go and Shine”) campaign, gave the Ugandan contingent of 25 athletes a financial boost ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
