Uganda Martyrs Women Football Club are the 2023 FUFA Women’s Cup winners.

In a final played at Bishop Maraka College playground in Kumi on Saturday, Martyrs defeated She Maroons 1-0 to claim the Cup.

Captain Catherine Nagadya’s second-half beauty was enough for the Kiddawalimes to lift their maiden title.

The John Ssaka-coached side were dominant from the start with Nagadya and Latifah Nakasi missing two clear opportunities.

In the 34th minute, Martyrs were unlucky not to take the lead with their three attempts in quick succession hitting the woodwork.

In the 78th minute, Nagadya dribbled past three defenders before putting the ball in the back of the net.

Maroons who were hunting for the double this season after winning the FUFA Women Elite League had to endure the pain at the final whistle.

Teenager Nagadya became the youngest player to score in the final and win the title.

This was the first Cup for Martyrs and the second for Nagadya, Patience Nabulobi, Stella Namisango, and Viola Namuddu after winning it with She Makerere in 2019.

Nagadya scooped the MVP accolade as her teammate Sharon Kaidu was awarded as the best goalkeeper after conceding only once.

She Maroons’ Anitah Babirye took home the top scorer award thanks to her three goals in the competition.

Still on the awards, the Luzira-based club, She Maroons was given the fair play award.

Martyrs become the fourth team to win the Cup following Olila High School (2017), UCU Lady Cardinals (2018), and Makerere University WFC (2019).

In 2020, 2021, and 2022 editions were not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects.
