With Hoima City Stadium ready and Lira Stadium construction underway and designated training facilities getting ready, Uganda is making sure that facilities for Pamoja AFCON 2027 beat required standards.
In an update issued on the stadium which was closed in September 2025 for the second time in a space of 5 years, National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr. Patrick Bernard Ogwel on Saturday, January 24, confirmed, “After setting everything up, the Namboole Stadium upgrade is to start this February”.
“The money for that job shall be coming in bits, but we are confident to have the work done to host AFCON 2027.”
The light-up was noticed during a consultative meeting that was centered on gathering ideas from senior administrators and technical personnel from the sports industry, including those in special interstate groups, as the government, through the National Council of Sports and the Ministry of Education and Sports, is aiming for the National Sports Facilities Regulations.
In one of their eye-opening concerns, Kyambogo University Sports Tutor and the president of the Association of Uganda University Sport, George Wagogo, challenged the lack of facility maintenance, the appointment of the right people to do the right job, and hosting non-sporting activities on the facilities, including crusades and concerts.
The case was pointed to the status of Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, which lost its credibility in recent years, leading Uganda to host games outside Uganda.
The discussion is still ongoing as the task force continues to receive ideas on raised proposals, with a one-week time limit at the National Council of Sports.
