Zaina Namuleme, a midfield maestro captain of the reigning FUFA Women’s Super League champions Kampala Queens, has stepped down from her leadership role after two and a half seasons.
In a heartfelt message to the club’s management, Namuleme – a long-standing talent in Ugandan women’s football, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and well wishes to her successor.
“It has been a great honor to serve as the captain of Kampala Queens Football Club. I thank the club for giving me a special opportunity to serve in the best way possible,” she said.
“Today I cease to be the captain of Kampala Queens Football Club, but me and my fellow players and the new captain will play our hearts out to achieve our ultimate target of defending our league title this season,” she added.
“I strongly believe the club’s armband will be in safe hands and I wish our new skipper the very best in her endeavors,” Namuleme concluded.
Zaina Namuleme took over the club’s captaincy from Crested Cranes forward Fauzia Najjemba at the start of 2021/22 season. Najjemba had succeeded Aisha Namukisa.
In the first season as the captain, Namuleme nearly won the league title for Kampala Queens but they agonisingly lost the prestigious title to She Corporate FC, on goal difference of just one.
In the following season of 2022/23, Namuleme guided Kampala Queens FC to their maiden league title, becoming the first ever captain to lead the club to such a historic moment.
Currently, the club hasn’t released an official statement on who will replace Namuleme but goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro and midfielder Shamirah Nalugya who has been her assistant are hot favorites to take over.
