Uganda’s para badminton team has put on a spirited show at the 2025 Uganda Para Badminton International Tournament, with four players reaching Sunday’s finals despite a few tough semi-final losses.
In a field featuring top athletes from 10 countries, Uganda has punched above its weight, showing resilience and talent at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
Leading the way is Juliet Namunoga, who booked her spot in the final after edging fellow Ugandan Merida Nakayima Birungi in a gritty all-Ugandan semi-final. Namunoga’s strong form has made her a standout in the women’s category.
Also advancing to the finals are,
- Elizabeth Mwesigwa, who will face India’s Amudha Saravanan in the Women’s Singles Standing Upper 5 (SU5) category.
- Sylvia Nakanda, who will battle compatriot Sarah Nazziwa in an all-Ugandan final in the Women’s Singles Wheelchair 1+2 (WH1+WH2) category.
While Uganda suffered a few semi-final defeats Julius Obura fell to India’s Subhrajeet Maharana, Mutesi Sumin lost in two out of three sets to Vaishali Patel, and Hassan Mubiru bowed out to Bances Morales, however the team’s spirit remains high.
With four finalists, Uganda heads into Sunday’s finals with real chances for glory.
This year’s tournament continues to grow in stature, providing a vital stage for para badminton athletes who all have a dream to play at the Para Olympics with this being chance to collect some points.
The finals will be held Sunday, July 6, at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.
