Namuwongo Blazers demand answers over BAL nomination from FIBA

Namuwongo Blazers have asked the Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) to explain why City Oilers were nominated for Uganda’s 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) slot before the National Basketball League season ends.

Blazers CEO Daniel Obol wrote to FUBA after president Nasser Sserunjogi revealed the BAL required Uganda’s nominee by September 5 weeks before the playoffs conclude.

With the season running late, FUBA hinted it would choose the Oilers, the only Ugandan club to feature in the BAL in the past decade.

The move has stirred debate in the middle of a tense postseason. Normally, the league champion represents Uganda in the BAL.

But the early deadline means the Oilers currently trailing Sommet Basketball 1–0 in their semifinal could claim the berth regardless of the final outcome.

Meanwhile, the Blazers lead UCU Canons 1–0 in their own best-of-five semifinal and insist this year’s champion whether Sommet, Blazers, or Oilers should earn the spot.
