Benjamin Netanyahu Ajiri got the defence of the National Junior Chess Championship to a perfect start following his two victories on the opening day on Thursday at Nob View Hotel, Ntinda.
Ajiri who has won this competition two times in a row eased past his opponents, and will be hoping to find no hurdle in making it three in three. The tournament type is Swiss-System.
However, the path to victory won’t be without its challenges. Ajiri will have to contend with his brother Nygaard Ajiri who will be eager to avenge past defeats and claim the title for himself.
The Mwase brothers, Arthur and Mathew, also pose a threat, as does the talented Ethan Kigundu. Lurking in the shadows is Edwin Pido, a rising star who believes this is his moment to shine.
In the girls category, the competition is as stiff as in the boys! Sana Omprakash, WCM Maria Nakanyike, Patricia Kawuma, Hannah Zion Mawejje are all in contention.
Omprakash won the title last year, but she won’t find it easy defending it. The 16-year-old is however, fresh from winning the Kireka Open .
The event that has been categorized into six sections of U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, U18 got underway on Thursday, 4th January 2024. It is set to end on Sunday, 7th January.
Like most Uganda Chess Federation events, this one is also a qualifying event. It is a Qualifier for for Super 14 and major World U20 events for the year 2024.
