National Rugby 7s: Late Tournament Manual Sparks Outrage

Rugby is set to make a full return to the local scene this weekend with the start of the National 7s circuit.

After a two-month international break, the spotlight shifts to domestic competition, with Mongers hosting the inaugural event in Entebbe this weekend.

However, a cloud of discontent looms over the tournament as the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) released the tournament manual just a week before the kickoff.

This late distribution has left clubs scrambling to familiarize themselves with the regulations and prepare accordingly.

Financial disputes further complicate matters, with clubs demanding outstanding payments from the recently concluded championship.

It’s alleged that teams received only a third of the promised 45 million shillings, a shortfall that has angered administrators burdened by the high costs of running a rugby club.

The manual’s commercial section has also ignited controversy, granting Nile Special exclusive sponsorship rights for the entire series.

The beer brand will enjoy significant exposure, and participating clubs have been sternly warned against violating these terms.

While the manual clearly outlines URU’s and the sponsor’s expectations, it falls short of addressing the clubs’ demands.

Issues such as prize money, accommodation, transportation, and other support remain unaddressed.

To participate in the tournament, club chairpersons must sign and return the manual to URU before tomorrow’s draw.

While the tournament promises exciting rugby action, the underlying issues threaten to overshadow the competition.

It remains to be seen whether URU can address these concerns and ensure a smooth running event that satisfies both the governing body, sponsors, and most importantly, the participating clubs.
