  • UCU Canons 58-70 Namuwongo Blazers

Namuwongo Blazers secured their first win of the 2026 National Basketball League season with a convincing 70-58 victory over UCU Canons at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Friday night.

Backed by a lively Namuwongo crowd that broke into “Ekibe Sankalebba” vibes in the closing minutes, the Blazers delivered a composed response after losing their opener to City Oilers.

They set the tone early with a 9-0 run, showing urgency and control from the start. UCU steadied themselves and fought back into the game.

With six minutes left in the second quarter, Alier Jongroor’s layup tied the contest at 23-23.

But the Blazers quickly regained control, tightening up defensively and moving the ball better on offense to build a 34-26 halftime lead.

The third quarter was scrappy, with Namuwongo managing just 10 points. However, the Canons failed to fully capitalise despite outrebounding the Blazers 47-45 and forcing 21 turnovers.

UCU pushed in the final quarter, but the Blazers stayed calm, controlled the tempo and closed out the game to seal a deserved 12-point win.

Nyembo Fataki led Namuwongo with 14 points, while Innocent Ochera added 10 in a balanced team effort.

Marvin Jesse Okurut was the only UCU player in double figures, but his contribution was not enough to prevent defeat.
