Sommet Basketball Club sent a strong message in the 2025 National Basketball League playoffs, defeating KCCA Panthers 74-64 in Game One of their best-of-three quarterfinals at Lugogo Indoor Arena on Friday night.
Sommet started fast, taking a 20-14 lead after the first quarter and holding a nine-point advantage at halftime. KCCA tried to stay close, with Livingstone Kimambo hitting key free throws late in the second, but Sommet remained in control.
After the break, coach Albert Aciko’s side tightened up defensively and went on a scoring run, stretching the lead to 55-40 midway through the third quarter. KCCA attempted a late comeback, but Richard Mutawulu’s clutch three-pointer sealed the win.
Peter Cheng dominated with 20 points and 21 rebounds, while Fataki Nyembo added 17 points and 15 boards, both posting massive double-doubles. Mutawulu chipped in 11 points to cap a balanced team performance.
For KCCA, Caesar Kizito led with 18 points and Stanley Mugerwa added 10, but coach Raymond Muhumuza’s side struggled to match Sommet’s size and intensity.
