After a two-year silence, Uganda’s beloved Netball Super League roared back to life in spectacular fashion on Saturday, April 5.
However, the 2025 season was launched a week later under the stormy skies of Nakivubo Stadium in the presence of Netball Uganda President Jocelyn Ucanda and National Council of Sports General Secretary Dr Patrick Bernard Ogwel.
Despite a relentless downpour that soaked the city and delayed proceedings, the spirit of the game and its loyal fans remained unshaken.
As the rain subsided and the first whistle finally blew, the night transformed into a celebration not just of sport, but of resilience.
At the heart of this comeback stood Netball Uganda President, Jocelyn Ucanda whose reflections during the official launch were as powerful as the action on the court.
“We want these players to play in good conditions and improve officiation standards to raise the game to an international level,” Ucanda said, her words echoing the league’s renewed sense of purpose.
Her acknowledgment of the sport’s challenging hiatus struck a chord, especially with the female athletes who had borne the brunt of the break. Yet, her message was one of hope, determination, and progress.
Ucanda’s vision was echoed by Dr. Patrick Ogwel, General Secretary of the National Council of Sports and guest of honor.
Looking to the future, he highlighted infrastructure developments aimed at shielding the game from future disruptions, including the soon-to-be-completed Hoima City Stadium, a modern facility that promises indoor courts and weather-resilient features.
And while the occasion was steeped in emotion and anticipation, the real celebration came through the athletes who brought their A-game.
Record champions NIC, stung by an opening day loss to KCCA, bounced back with a fiery 57-44 win over defending champions Prisons.
KCCA, riding high, continued their dominance with a 61-23 thrashing of Busia, sending a clear message to the league.
