The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, is set to embark on an exciting journey as they prepare for the FIBA Africa Zone V Qualifiers.
With a coveted spot at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket on the line, the team has announced an important change in its technical team, a development that signals a new chapter in their pursuit of success on the continental stage.
In a key move, Nicholas Natuhereza, the team’s former assistant coach, has been appointed as the new head coach.
Natuhereza takes over from Goran Lojo, who had initially been set to lead the Gazelles but opted to pursue another opportunity with the Great Britain team.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) President, Nasser Sserunjogi, expressed confidence in Natuhereza’s abilities, highlighting his knowledge and experience as pivotal to the team’s aspirations.
“Nick Natuhereza will be the head coach for the Gazelles at the upcoming FIBA Zone V Qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt,” said Mr. Sserunjogi.
“While Goran Lojo was initially set to lead the team, he opted for another opportunity, and we wish him all the best. However, we trust Nick’s experience and knowledge will guide the team to success.”
The new technical team also features a familiar face in Ugandan basketball.
Julius Lutwama, who has served in various coaching capacities within the Ugandan basketball community, will be joining the team as the assistant coach.
In addition, Ben Komakech, a respected Ugandan basketball legend, will take on the important role of video analyst, ensuring that the team is equipped with the necessary insights to enhance their performance.
The 38-year-old who called time on a stellar playing career following his 9th season with City Oilers, all in which he emerged champion now joins the side on stable and credible grounds.
Natuhereza, who has been a part of the Gazelles’ coaching staff for several years, expressed his excitement at the opportunity to lead the team to new heights.
“I accept the challenge; it’s always an honour to be in this position as the head coach. Hopefully, we can do some good things and qualify for the Afrobasket,” said Natuhereza, sharing his enthusiasm for the task ahead.
Gazelles are set to begin their preparations for the FIBA Africa Zone V Qualifiers on Tuesday, 21st January.
The qualifiers will take place in Cairo, Egypt, and will determine which teams will secure their spots in the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket, one of the most prestigious tournaments in African women’s basketball.
With a strong, experienced coaching team at the helm, the Gazelles are poised to make a strong push for qualification, fueled by their determination and the leadership of their new head coach, Nicholas Natuhereza.
