Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership delivered another exciting round of action in Week 5, highlighted by a historic result as Nile Rapids defeated the Black Pearls 25–17, a victory that not only marked their first ever Premiership win over the defending champions but also significantly reshaped the race at the top of the table.
Rapids Produce Statement Win
The Nile Rapids delivered one of their most complete performances in recent seasons, combining discipline, teamwork, and tactical awareness to overcome one of the league’s most dominant sides.
Leading the Rapids’ attacking charge was Justin Anguicha, who crossed the whitewash twice, finishing off well worked team movements that showcased the Rapids’ growing confidence with the ball in hand.
Her tries set the tone for a performance that constantly kept the Black Pearls under pressure.
The Rapids’ third try came through Jemima Namukose, who showed excellent awareness to pounce on a loose ball, quickly collecting it and powering over the try line to extend the Rapids’ lead at a crucial moment in the game.
At flyhalf, Tina Akello delivered a composed masterclass at number 10, orchestrating play with calm decision-making and precise distribution.
Her ability to control territory and maintain scoreboard pressure proved decisive as she added ten vital points from the boot, ultimately ensuring the Rapids secured the historic victory.
For the Black Pearls, the game also presented an interesting tactical shift. Emily Lekuru was deployed at centre rather than her usual wing position, limiting her usual attacking opportunities out wide.
However, Lekuru still left her mark on the game with a well-taken drop goal, demonstrating her versatility and rugby intelligence despite playing in an unfamiliar role.
While the Black Pearls showed flashes of their attacking brilliance, the Rapids’ defensive organization and tactical discipline proved too strong on the day.
Thunderbirds Edge Avengers to Take Top Spot
Elsewhere in the women’s competition, the Thunderbirds secured a narrow 10–5 victory over the Avengers in a tightly contested encounter.
The match was defined by strong defensive displays from both sides, but Thunderbirds managed to capitalize on their chances and secure a crucial win.
That result proved significant in the standings as it propelled Thunderbirds to the top of the table, putting them in a strong early position in the title race.
Ewes Outmuscle Panthers
In the other women’s fixture, Ewes defeated Panthers 29–20 in an entertaining contest that saw both teams show attacking ambition.
Ewes’ ability to convert key opportunities ultimately proved decisive, earning them an important win as they look to climb away from the lower half of the table.
For Panthers, the defeat extended their difficult start to the season as they continue searching for their first win of the campaign.
Title Race Heating Up
With Thunderbirds now at the summit, the Black Pearls looking to bounce back, and the Nile Rapids gaining momentum after their breakthrough victory, the Women’s Premiership title race is beginning to take shape.
For the Nile Rapids, their historic win over the Black Pearls could prove to be a turning point in their season, signaling that the balance of power in the women’s game may be shifting as new contenders rise to challenge the traditional giants.
