Nkumba University defeated International University of East Africa (IUEA) 2-0 in Entebbe on Wednesday to move to second place in Group E of the University Football League.
Aaron Kikoyo and Irivia Obuto each scored a goal for Nkumba, who now have seven points from four matches, two behind leaders St Lawrence.
IUEA and Gulu University are third and fourth with two and one points respectively.
Nkumba coach Sulaiman Bbosa praised his players for their character and performance.
“It was a good game and the boys played under instructions,” he said.
“When we picked a point against IUEA in the first leg we made a lot of mistakes such as failing to convert our chances,”
“Since we had studied the team in the first leg, there were some things we were supposed to change which we did,”
“This win gives us an advantage to advance out of the group stages to go to quarterfinals only if we can win our last two games,”
“I’m happy we won and we didn’t concede,” he concluded.
IUEA coach Hassan Wasswa was disappointed with the result but felt his team made mistakes that cost them.
“We wanted to get a win today in Nkumba, unfortunately we conceded uncalled for goals,” he said.
“The team lacked concentration and this is the reason why we lost the game. We have to get back to the drawing board to win our games. This is a team which we are trying to build,” he concluded.
