In a message to Ugandan gamblers, Denis Mudene Ngabirano, CEO of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), has urged the public to bet responsibly and avoid gambling with money they canโt afford to lose.
โBet only with what you can afford to lose,โ Mudene said. โGaming should be entertainment, not a way to make money or meet your needs.โ
His message is part of the Boardโs Responsible Gaming Awareness Campaign, which includes online and community outreach activities aimed at helping people make better choices when it comes to gambling.
Mudene emphasized the need for self-control: โKnow when to play, and know when to stop. If you havenโt taken care of your basics food, rent, school fees, then you shouldnโt be betting at all.โ
The campaign also offers a simple self-check quiz on the NLGRB website. It has 10 questions to help players figure out if their gambling habits are getting out of hand.
โIf you answer โyesโ to five or more, you may have a gambling problem,โ he warned. โBut youโre not alone, we have trained professionals ready to help.โ
Some betting platforms now include self-exclusion tools to help users limit how much or how often they can gamble.
โThese tools are there to help you stay in control. Use them. Set your limits. Walk away when it stops being fun,โ Mudene said.
He also had a clear warning for youth: โIf youโre under 25, we strongly discourage you from gambling. It can be addictive and mentally harmful, especially for young people.โ
The NLGRB is also working with counselors and treatment specialists to support individuals and families affected by gambling harm.
โDonโt suffer in silence,โ Mudene said. โReach out, weโre here to help.โ
He ended by calling on everyone community leaders, influencers, and betting operators to take part in promoting responsible gaming.
โLetโs create a culture where players are informed, in control, and protected.โ
