No star power for Cameroon as they prepare to face Uganda in Marrakech

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are roaring into a new era, but with an unfamiliar voice.

As they touch down in Marrakech for a pair of friendlies against Uganda and Equatorial Guinea, one glaring absence defines the build-up, there is no star power.

Premier League regulars Andre Onana (Manchester United), Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion) and Brian Mbeumo (Brentford) are all missing from Marc Brys’ latest squad.

Napoli’s midfield lynchpin and Serie A title winner André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is also absent, casting an unmistakable shadow over what is now a largely experimental team.

For Brys, recently appointed and facing the weight of expectation that comes with leading one of Africa’s most storied football nations, this is a calculated move.

Rather than lean on the comfort of established names, he’s opted for a sweeping shift, a blend of youth, local league promise, and a hunger to prove something new.

In their place Serge Daura, Florent Batoum, and Boris Mfoumou are names that may not yet resonate beyond Cameroon’s borders but who now carry the pride of a nation into these preparatory battles.

These matches, while only friendlies on paper, are proving grounds for a squad being reshaped for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September.

Leading this charge is Vincent Aboubakar, a seasoned forward whose goals have long been a source of inspiration for Cameroon.

He remains the bridge between past glories and future aspirations. Around him, a host of fresh faces look to write their own chapters in Cameroonian football history.

The full squad hints at a clear rebuilding philosophy. Between the posts, Brys has called up Simon Ngapandouetnbu, Simon Omossola and Devis Epassy.

In defense, names like Yvan Dibango, James Eto’o and Jean-Charles Castelletto will anchor a backline with much to prove.

The midfield is a mix of untapped potential and fringe experience Martin Atemengue, Olivier Kemen, and Wilitty Younoussa will shoulder the creative responsibilities in Anguissa’s absence.

Up front, aside from Aboubakar, attacking duties will be shared among the likes of Patrick Soko, Ignatius Ganago and the new generation of Daura, Batoum, and Mfoumou.
