Tension filled Serena Hotel on Saturday as the Uganda Premier League (UPL) launched its first-ever double header without two of its biggest clubs.

SC Villa and Vipers SC joined by NEC FC were conspicuously absent, deepening their standoff with league organizers.

The press conference was meant to build excitement for the October 4 twin fixtures at the refurbished Namboole Stadium, but the boycott stole the spotlight.

Only KCCA FC and Kitara FC, the scheduled opponents, attended alongside League Manager Owori Eric Eron and FUFA third vice president for clubs, Hon. Nakiwala Florence Kiyingi.

Villa, Vipers, and NEC continue to reject the new three-round league format, saying their concerns remain unresolved.

Their no-show signaled a fresh escalation, but officials insist the games will proceed.

“When the host accepts the venue we present, the visitor has no option but to honor the fixture,” Owori said.

Kitara chairperson ASP Nyaika Gilbert urged fans to pack Namboole for “a grand occasion,” while KCCA business manager Joshua Nagenda added spice, warning Villa to “come prepared for showtime.”

Villa are scheduled to face KCCA in the evening clash, with Vipers meeting Kitara earlier in the day.
