National Basketball League | Men | Game 6 | Lugogo
- Namuwongo Blazers Vs City Oilers – 7 pm
Series : 3-2
On Wednesday evening , under the bright Lugogo lights, the Blazers step onto the court with history within reach, one win away from ending a decade of City Oilers dominance and claiming their first ever National Basketball League title.
For a team once seen as underdogs, this moment feels almost unreal.
The Blazers lead the best of seven finals 3–2, a stunning comeback after losing the first two games.
What looked like another Oilers coronation has turned into a real power shift in Ugandan basketball.
The End of an Era?
City Oilers have ruled the league since 2013, winning ten straight championships.
Every challenger Falcons, Warriors, UCU, and even the Blazers has tried and failed to stop them.
Their 2022 finals win over Namuwongo in a thrilling seven game series only cemented their legacy.
But two years later, the tables have turned. The Oilers, once the standard of dominance, now find themselves on the ropes, and at the hands of familiar faces.
The Blazers’ revolution
Namuwongo’s transformation has been driven by four ex-Oilers,James Okello, Ivan Muhwezi, Jimmy Enabu, and led by Tonny Drilleba, veterans who once formed the backbone of the Oilers dynasty.
They’ve brought leadership, experience, and a burning desire to write a new story.
In Game Five on Sunday, Okello led by example, scoring 17 points and guiding his team to a vital win that pushed them to the edge of glory.
His composure and determination have defined the Blazers’ rise alongside Drilleba, a name that has been influential to this turn around.
Drilleba’s attitude takes you back to a statement he echoed in 2023 while he was still an Oilers “Beat us in a Seven game series and then we can talk”, putting him at the front as the centre of magic now that he’s on the Blazers wing.
The Oilers, meanwhile, looked vulnerable. Their poor shooting just 3 of 18 from deep, told the story.
Always with double figures, Kurt-Curry Wegscheider and Chad Bowie chipped in 15 and 14 points, but without stronger support, the defending champions faltered.
Game 6: The defining moment
As Game Six looms, the stakes couldn’t be higher. For the Blazers, victory will be a symbol of change, the end of an era, and proof that patience and belief can conquer legacy.
For the Oilers, it’s all about dominance and pride, the pride of champions unwilling to surrender without a fight since they are still in it.
Will the Blazers seize the moment now and make history, or will they have to wait a little longer for destiny to catch up?
