After winning the Uganda Chess Championship, a performance keenly observed by the Real Stars Sports Agency, Mark Nyola Wasswa was named the Chess Real Star for February.
During an awarding ceremony at a Restaurant on Tuesday, March 3, he was announced the winner of the chess accolade, beating out December Real Star Sana Ompraka and Olivia Asiimwe.
In his reaction, Nyola, the son of football legend Godfrey Nyola, joyously stated,
“I feel great having won this tournament because it was a tough one for me, being the seed number four in the tournament, and also fighting against the masters. They were international masters, FIDE masters, and candidate masters. It is also special to win the Real Star Sports Award; it is a big push.”
“Now I am not a master, but I managed to win the tournament. So, I am looking forward to being number one in the country and also winning many events and representing the country in the World Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan in September,” said Nyola.
The same ceremony had two more winners for the month. Richard Basangwa, NEC FC forward, beat Rogers Omedwa of Entebbe UPPC and Vipers’ captain Milton Karisa.
Meanwhile, All Africa Senior Badminton Challenge gold medalist Fadilah Shamika Rafi went on to beat Tracy Naluwooza and Arafat Tendo Kibirige for Badminton Real Star for February.
