Uganda’s State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has reassured the public that the country remains on track in its preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, despite concerns raised in a recent inspection.
In a statement shared on X, Ogwang said government invited the Confederation of African Football to assess key facilities as part of early checks. The inspection looked at Nelson Mandela National Stadium and Hoima Stadium.
He confirmed that CAF identified gaps, mainly at Hoima Stadium, but said the issues have already been handed to the contractor, SUMMA. The company has since met government officials and started working on the concerns.
Ogwang said the focus now is to fix the issues before the next CAF inspection in August.
He also pointed to other challenges such as airports, roads and hotels, noting these fall under different sectors.
Janet Museveni, who chairs the inter-ministerial committee on AFCON preparations, has already presented a cabinet paper that secured more funding to address them.
Uganda is co-hosting the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania under the “East Africa Pamoja” bid.
Ogwang maintained that government is committed to delivering a successful tournament, with efforts underway to meet all CAF requirements in time.
