Byron Oketayot will captain the Rugby Cranes as Uganda names a focused, battle-ready 28-man squad for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which kicks off next week in Kampala.
The Uganda Rugby Union confirmed the team over the weekend, with Uganda set to face fierce rivals Kenya in the opener on Tuesday, July 8, at the Mandela National Stadium annex pitch.
Back at the helm, Oketayot brings calm authority and tireless work ethic to the team. The flanker leads a powerful back row alongside vice-captain Frank Kidega and Alex Aturinda whose continued rise from Sevens captain to 15s leader has earned him growing respect in the squad.
Also returning is fullback Philip Wokorach, fresh off a standout season in India’s Rugby Premier League, where he scored 12 tries and finished second on the top scorers list. His speed and experience will be key to Uganda’s attacking edge.
The squad mixes seasoned heads with fresh energy. Hooker Edward Emiemu (Walukuba Barbarians) earns his first call-up after a strong local season.
He’ll be joined by front-rowers Fahad Maido (Jinja Hippos) and Blair Ayebazibwe (KOBs), both known for their strength in the scrum and around the field.
The midfield trio of Isaac Massa, Ian Munyani, and Timothy Kisiga returns, forming the core of Uganda’s offense.
At half-back, Conrad Wanyama, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, and kicker Liam Walker will steer the team with composure and vision.
