FUFA Women’s Super League 2022/23 season had a good number of players give in 100% but some went above and over.
With 10 teams and over 200 active players, it was a tough task to come up with a list of the top five performers.
The uphill task had me leave out names that had a colourful season that ended over the weekend.
1. Shakira Nyinagahirwa (Kawempe Muslim FC)
You dread to think where Kawempe would be without Shakirah Nyinagahirwa, who has successfully evolved her game the entire season.
Nyinagahirwa’s numbers are clear and might be discouraging this season, looking impossible for some young players like her.
She probably doesn’t give a hoot that her presence in the League has prompted a newfound existentialist outlook on the beautiful game.
She will have plenty of opportunities to score goals and win while playing for Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.
The teenager scored 12 goals and assisted 7 times in 18 league games which helped her team to finish second on the log and also to win the golden boot and MVP accolades.
The flamboyant talent has at least scored or assisted in every game in the Fufa Women’s Super League this season and she tops the ranks.
2. Resty Nanziri (Kampala Queens FC)
We won’t say Resty Nanziri is the best goal scorer because it’s difficult to judge with such a calm on-field presence.
But, her teammates all appear to appreciate and respect her. And there’s no doubt they’re doing a lot better with her.
However, we shall argue that Nanziri is a wonderful footballer, based on evidence from this season.
Nanziri has scored 11 goals only one behind the league’s top scorer and managed to register a couple of assists.
She’s a very functional creative, which may sound like a backhanded compliment, but it means that you can count on her to score and create opportunities.
Nanziri’s performance helped her team to lift their first-ever league title and with no doubt, the striker has been Kampala Queens’ best player this season.
3. Daisy Nakaziro (Kampala Queens FC)
Kampala Queens FC Head Coach Hamza Lutalo had a selection headache of which keeper to hand the first choice place.
Recruit Daisy Nakaziro was the remedy hence sending Prima Mugide and Gloria Namakula to the bench.
Bought from Uganda Martyrs, the custodian proved to doubters that she’s the best local-based goalkeeper.
Despite Mugide’s last season performance and Namakula’s brilliance with Tooro Queens Nakaziro bossed the gloves.
Nakaziro’s incredible saves, leadership and seniority ranks her as the first-choice goalkeeper for Queens FC and in the league.
Nakaziro managed to keep 9 clean sheets in the 12 games she played in the League this season.
The said numbers were the most by a goalkeeper hence winning the golden glove on top of her side lifting the League title.
4. Catherine Nagadya (Uganda Martyrs Lubaga)
Ladies and gentlemen meet arguably the best Uganda Martyrs forward in their history, Catherine Nagadya.
Many players have donned the Lubaga-based side’s jersey but what gives her an edge is her consistency.
Nagadya’s pace with the ball which beats leave defenders for dead will easily make you fall in love with her game.
With Uganda Martyrs’ poor run of 8 losses, the teenager managed to score 7 goals and register 11 assists in 16 games she played.
This made her the player with the most involvement yielding to goals in the fewest games this season.
5. Hadijah Nandago (Kawempe Muslim)
If there’s a player you would cancel your programs to go and enjoy her playing, then is Hadijah Nandago.
Kawempe enjoyed the second round of the League thanks to home-grown product Nandago.
Nandago had the best season in terms of numbers but it’s her all-round game that puts her name on the big table.
The dynamite player for the Valley Warriors scored 8 goals and made 6 assists this season to help her side finish second.
Nandago’s creativity in tight spaces, dead ball ability, and good attitude saw her make the list of my top five.
