Uganda Athletics President Dominic Otucet has thanked the Government of Uganda for continuous funding towards athletics, though remaining in much need.
This occurred while passing an official announcement for the Uganda Athletics team which is going to Tokyo in Japan for the World Athletics Championship.
In his words, the president stated, “I am grateful for the government of Uganda for the substantial funding always, but we still need more government funding. I am also grateful for the government to fund the game of football; we also request to be funded in the same way. With that amount of money injected in football, Uganda Athletics can shine more worldwide. At this time, we are only taking 21 players, but Italy has a contingent of 80 there; we would like to take even more.”
Athletics is the second-funded sports discipline by the government of Uganda but remains far below a quarter of football, which receives 17 billion annually.
Athletics remains the vibrant sports discipline for Uganda at the international stage with the endless list of world stars like Joshua Cheptegei, Stephen Kiprotich, Halima Nakaayi, and others.
The team announced is in preparation camping at Trinity Bible Institute in Kapchorwa ahead of the championship scheduled for 13 to 21st September.
The team, planned to travel in three batches, will be under the surveillance of Uganda Athletics President Dominic Otucet as team manager, who will be there before the championship for the World Athletics Congress.
The president will also oversee other officials: Benjamin Njia, Peter Chelangat, Grace Chesang, Paul Okello, Denis Okiror Okudach, Quito Odinga, and Faustino Kiwa as coaches and co-officials.
