Uganda Premier League record Champions Sports Club Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat in their 2023 League opener at Mutesa II Wankulukuku Stadium.

This meant that newcomers Kitara FC left Kampala with all three points back to Hoima thanks to a late own goal from Elvis Ngonde.

The 16-time winners who failed to register a win on the day of last season to lift the title started on the wrong foot.

SC Villa conceded an early goal courtesy of Denis Omedi but it was cancelled out by Charles Lwanga before the halftime break.

At Wankulukuku, dancehall musician Ziza Bafana spiced up the matchday with his hit songs alongside dancers donning different club jerseys.

Elsewhere, it was the same script for home teams as both Bright Stars and Mbarara City lost 1-0 to Bul and NEC respectively.

Lawrence Tezikya scored for the Super 8 champions and Jinja-based side while Joseph Dhata netted for the other newly promoted side NEC.
