Uganda Premier League is ready to welcome back one of its own after NEC FC is set to confirm the signing of midfielder Pius Obuya on a three year contract.

Obuya, 27, returns to Ugandan football after several seasons in Serbia, bringing to an end his stint in Europe and sealing a long awaited homecoming. The former Maroons FC midfielder will join NEC FC on a deal that runs until 2029.

Born in Pallisa, Obuya left Uganda in 2021 to pursue his career abroad, featuring for FK Kabel Novi Sad before later turning out for Radnički Sremska Mitrovica in the Serbian First League.

His contract there expired earlier this season, leaving him a free agent until NEC moved swiftly to secure his services.

Obuya’s journey has been one of steady growth. He first made his name at Maroons with his composure on the ball and eye for a pass, qualities that later earned him the chance to test himself in Europe’s demanding lower leagues.

The experience sharpened his tactical awareness and maturity, assets NEC believe will lift their midfield.

For NEC FC, the signing underlines their growing ambition in the top flight. The club sees Obuya as a key creative figure, capable of driving play from midfield and filling the void left by departed options such as Titus Ssematimba and Charles Waibi.

With his vision, technical ability and experience, Obuya is expected to play a central role as NEC look to close the gap on established league heavyweights including Vipers SC, SC Villa, Police FC, Entebbe UPPC FC and KCCA FC.

His return also adds to the UPL’s appeal at a time when the league continues to push for greater professionalism and competitiveness.

Other player on the verge of joining NEC FC is former KCCA goalkeeper Juma Mutebi from Lugazi FC and Ghana midfielder Justice Blay.

NEC FC will start their UPL second round campaign on February 13, against KCCA FC at the Phillip Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.
