The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has after months of waiting acceded and consented to the National Sports Bill 2023.

The Bill, which was first laid to the table in November 2022 and passed by Parliament in March 2023, was returned to the President with amendments, which he has now approved.

The Bill was presented by FUFA President and Budiope East Legislator Moses Hassim Magogo.

The National Sports Act, 2023 aims to professionalize sports in Uganda and promote the World Anti-Doping Code.

It also establishes a new National Council of Sports Board, which will be responsible for governing the sports sector in Uganda.

The board will be composed of a chairperson and six other members, including representatives from the ministry responsible for sports, the National Sports Association, athletes, the private sector, and two persons from all traditional regions of the country.

Further, it is emphasised that every member of the board shall be a person with knowledge and experience in sports administration.

The board members, according to the president, were to be appointed by the Sports Minister, considering the interest of the sports sector, its shareholders, Persons with Disabilities and gender balance.

About Archery, the President reminded Parliament to include the sport, considering it is played at Olympics.

Kick boxing was left out because of administrative wrangles but NCS has the authority to reconsider them once the internal issues are solved.

The bill also provides for punitive action against individuals who commit the offence of illegal participation in sports activities.

The passage of the National Sports Bill 2023 is a major step forward for sports in Uganda. The bill is expected to help improve the quality of sports in Uganda and to promote the country’s athletes on the international stage.
