Nakivubo Stadium was a scene of dominance and rising youth talent on Saturday as Uganda Prisons Netball Club stormed back into Uganda Netball Super League action with a commanding 70-22 victory over Luweero.
Returning from a third-place finish at the East African Netball Club Championship in Zanzibar, Prisons displayed grit and fluid team play, securing their second win in three league outings this season.
Dressed in their signature blue with yellow stripes, the Prisons Queens wasted no time asserting control. They came out strong and fast, thrilling fans with clinical execution on both ends of the court.
Despite missing some senior players like Christine Kango Namulumba, Lillian Ajio, Tausi Mumena, and Hadijah Nakabuye, the team proved their depth and resilience.
From the opening whistle, the trio of Miriam Ayenyo (Center), Joyce Nakibuule (Wing Attack), and Malisera Akello (Wing Defense) dominated the mid-court.
Ayenyo’s sharp passes to Nakibuule and her swift feeds to goal attack Dorothy Tabia orchestrated a flurry of early goals. Tabia’s agility and playmaking opened space for debutant goal shooter Mary Asio Dovita, who impressed with her accuracy under pressure.
Prisons led 15-6 after the first quarter, extending their dominance to a 34-18 halftime lead. The seamless coordination in attack, anchored by Ayenyo and Tabia, continued to break Luweero’s defense apart. Dovita’s clinical shooting and crowd-pleasing finishes turned the game into a spectacle.
The defensive line, Stella Nanfuka (Goal Keeper), Malisera Akello (Goal Defense) and Sylvia Nanyonga (Wing Defense) was equally relentless.
Nanfuka’s blocks and Akello’s interceptions suffocated Luweero’s attempts, while Nanyonga’s tight marking forced errors and turnovers.
By the third quarter, Prisons were in full control, leading 56-15 after a 22-goal blitz. Coach Elnouredine Kato Hassan capitalized on the lead to showcase young talent.
Eighteen-year-old Kenema Margret replaced Nakibuule at wing attack, injecting speed and flair. Saidah Bulage filled in for Nanfuka with confident saves while Nashim Khadaala kept the tempo high at center.
Kazana Nasiim returned to wing defense after a three-year absence and Winny Florence Anyait made her debut as a goal shooter.
The fresh legs proved effective, helping Prisons net another 24 goals in the final quarter for a dominant 70-22 finish.
