The National 7s Core Status Tournament returns this Saturday, October 4, at the Ruga Ruga Sports Facility in Busukuma, Gayaza.

With Elgon Wolves and Gulu City Falcons relegated from the just ended National 7s Series, two men’s spots are now open.

The Uganda Rugby Union, through regional qualifiers in the North, West, East and Central, has assembled eight sides to fight for promotion.

For the second year running, Ruga Ruga will host the decisive battles. The format is clear: two groups of four, top two advance to the semifinals, and the finalists earn promotion.

The champion takes bragging rights, while the rest prepare for another year of building.

The men’s pools

Pool A features Makerere Impis, Eastern champions Njeru Hurricanes, Kitgum Lions, and KIU Crows. Pool B has Victoria Sharks, Mbale Elephants, Lira Bulls, and Buddu Bear.

Each carries a story. The Hurricanes return with pedigree. Mbale Elephants squeezed through on points difference edging Kakira Simbas. KIU Crows outlasted Mbarara Titans despite the Titans winning a circuit.

Meanwhile, Central’s Sharks and Impis, who qualified early, come in as favorites with extra prep time.

The women’s challenge

The women’s battle is sharper: only one team goes up. The Ewes, last year’s beaten finalists, headline the draw.

They are joined by Kigezi Queens, relegated Kitgum Queens looking for redemption, and newcomers Mbale Eagles.

What’s at stake

Beyond trophies and pride, the tournament offers survival and relevance in Uganda’s 7s rugby.

For men’s teams, making the final means promotion. For women, it’s winner-takes alla ticket to the elite.
