Digging into years of the Real Stars sports monthly awards, the August 2025 edition stands much more iconic as the Lifetime Achievement Award went to aging 1978 Africa Cup of Nations star Abbey Nasur.
The award and afforded token were taken to the legend’s residence in Naguru Go Down, a suburb of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
Abbey Nasur is among the few remaining stars of the historical Uganda Cranes squad that lost the AFCON final to host Ghana in 1978. The other living stars of the squad are Paul Ssali, Tom Lwanga, Polly Ouma, and a few others.
At the award’s presentation, Nasur called for support to fellow sportsmen, “I am pleased that I am still in the memories of Ugandans. I also rally for this appreciation to go beyond others, those I was with, those that came after us, and young ones in pursuing sports careers.”
To the young ones, Nasur, who is living critically and barely moving in a wheelchair, urged them to pursue their careers with enjoyment, focus, humility, and hard work in order to succeed in their sporting careers.
Nasur’s wife, Sophia Nasur Abbey Nakasi, called and appreciated the courtesy visit, stating, “Honestly, it is pleasing to have this moment. I am also thankful for the support, but there is also a need to go beyond supporting other sportsmen; they need to be cared about critically.”
Who is Abbey Nasur?
Nasur was born in 1952 to Yusuf Muteguya and Nambi Muteguya. He started his footballing career in the early 1970s, playing for clubs like Maroons FC, KCCA FC, and Gor Mahia in the 1980s.
At the international level, Nasur played in three AFCON tournaments in 1974, 1976, and 1978. Later, in the early 2000s, he coached football at KCCA FC and Water FC.
The couple was blessed with eight children, losing two as adults in accidents. Former Rugby player Saad Abbey Nasur and former Basketballer Sarah Abbey Nasur both died in road accidents on different occasions in Uganda and Kenya while traveling to games.
The living children are Ramadhan Nasur, Yasin Nasur, Uthuman Nasur, Nambi Nasur, Shamim Nasur, and Ali Nasur, who are living in Uganda and Kenya.
Back to the awards, Nasur was a winner alongside Uganda Cranes CHAN Captain and Viper SC Defender Rogers Torach Okachi. For his bravery, he beat teammates Allan Okello and Reagan Mpande.
The other winner was Ponsiano Lwakataka, who bagged his 6th Real Stars Monthly Sports award and his fourth this year. He beat competition from Ronald Ssebuguzi, who leads the National Rally Championship this year, and Mike Mukula Junior.
