A partnership between the Uganda Red Cross Society and the National Council of Sports is taking shape, with a shared goal of using sport to improve the lives of young people.
Red Cross officials met NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya, General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogweland the council’s leadership at Lugogo to lay the groundwork for the collaboration. The focus is on youth aged 18 to 24.
The Red Cross already has an agreement with the Ministry of Education and Sports, mainly targeting students. A similar deal with NCS, expected within two weeks, will expand the programme to communities and sports federations.
The initiative blends sport with practical skills. Participants will be trained in first aid, handling medical emergencies and managing injuries. It will also cover athlete safeguarding, gender inclusion and safety in sport.
Tashobya said the plan fits NCS’s push to spread sport across the country and strengthen talent development. He also urged federations to embrace partnerships beyond government.
The Red Cross brings experience from its work with the Ministry of Health and the Office of the Prime Minister.
Its impact was recently seen during the African Nations Championship, where its volunteers supported operations.
If completed, the partnership will give more young people a chance to grow through sport while gaining skills that matter beyond the game.
