Uganda Basketball Champions, City Oilers needed an 83-73 victory over Zambian side Matero Magic, to storm the semi-finals of the Division East of the Elite 16, of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers in Cape Town, South Africa.
This followed their Tuesday 71-59 win over Madagascar’s COSPN, to make it to the semi-finals with a game to spare.
The Oilers were inspired by strong shows from Falando Jones and Germaine Roebuck who managed an impressive 26 and 24 points respectively.
The duo’s tally was complemented by nine points apiece from either of Titus Lual, Uche Nnamdi and Ngor Barnaba.
It’s also worthy noting that the Oilers’ win over Matero was the second against them in the qualifiers having beaten them in October as well.
On Wednesday though, the sides tied 17-17 by the end of the first quarter, before the Ugandan side won the second 26-08 to open a strong lead that later turned into victory.
Oilers will take on Mozambique’s Ferroviario Beira before meeting their semi-final opponents. A win at this stage will have them make the BAL for the first time in history.
