Ruby’s campaign took another hit on Saturday evening as they suffered their second consecutive loss in the Plascon-powered MAXX T20 tournament at Lugogo Oval.
Despite a spirited effort, Ruby managed just 116 runs in 18.3 overs before Sapphire surged ahead with a brisk 120/4 in just 14.1 overs.
Ruby’s innings were marked by inconsistent contributions. Roger Galiwango Mukasa top scored with 29 before falling in a run out, while Anas Baig chipped in 24 runs.
Other players struggled to make a significant impact, with Brian Asaba unable to score and several batsmen recording single-digit contributions.
The side’s collapse was evident as wickets tumbled regularly, with key partnerships failing to materialize. Extras also added a modest 14 runs, but it wasn’t enough to put Ruby in a competitive position.
Sapphire capitalized on Ruby’s faltering performance with a commanding chase led by a standout display from Collins Obuya.
Obuya, in particular, impressed with a swift 47 off 27 balls, setting the tone for a well-paced innings. Contributions from Cyrus Kakuru (25) and a resilient unbeaten 21 from Calvin Watuwa, complemented by Oloka Pius’s unbeaten 14, ensured that Sapphire reached the target comfortably with six wickets in hand.
This defeat marked a setback for Ruby, as they now face increased pressure to regroup and adjust their strategies in upcoming fixtures as they look to face Gold on Sunday morning.
Meanwhile, Sapphire’s win not only breaks Ruby but also boosts their campaign, setting the stage for an intriguing contest in the MAXX tournament with the first Round Robin round nearing completion.
Sapphire will face the Firing Emerald on Sunday afternoon.
