Ronald Rugumayo knows how to shine when it counts and he’s done it again. The South Africa-based pro shot a one-under 70 on Day Two of the Pearl of Africa Golf Series at Lugazi Hills to grab the lead, setting up a thrilling Day Three clash with his friend and rival Ronald Otile.
“I consider Otile one of the most talented golfers this country has ever produced,” Rugumayo said.
“I’m really happy to be playing alongside him tomorrow, it’s going to be special.”
Rugumayo started and ended his round with birdies but admitted it wasn’t perfect.
“I’ve had some bad luck. On hole two, I had 150 yards to the green but a terrible lie.
And hole 16’s been tricky both days, OB yesterday, hazard today, then a three-putt,” he said. “But I feel like the next two days will go better.”
His lead is slim, just one shot ahead of Otile, Grace Kasango, and Marvin Max Kibirige.
Close behind are Lugazi’s own club pro Canary Kabise and Rodell Gaita Taddeo, who bounced back from a double-bogey on the third to finish with an even-par 71.
The amateur race is also tight. Joseph Kasozi leads by one stroke over Juma Abiti, Asuman Tumwesigye, and Joel Okoth.
In the women’s category, Meron Kyomugisha and Martha Babirye are tied for first after Peace Kabasweka withdrew.
