Ronald Rugumayo is chasing history. As the 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Golf Open tees off from September 10-13 at Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club, the 31-year-old is determined to end Uganda’s 11-year wait for a home champion.
No Ugandan has lifted the title since Deo Akope in 2014, but Rugumayo, who finished joint second in 2023, believes this could be his year.
Facing some of Africa’s best on the tough par-72 Lugazi course, he knows preparation will decide everything.
“I just have to prepare the right way; everything else will fall in place,” Rugumayo said. “Lugazi is a true championship course, it demands stamina, mental toughness, and precise ball striking, which is my strength.”
This year’s Open carries extra meaning for Rugumayo. Days before tee-off, he was unveiled as the newest “Walker” by tournament sponsor Johnnie Walker, celebrating his rise from caddie to international golf trailblazer.
“Against all odds, he has kept walking, taking bold steps regardless of life’s challenges,” said Johnnie Walker Brand Manager Christine Kyokunda. “His story reflects our spirit of progress.”
Earlier this year, Rugumayo made history as the first Ugandan to make the cut at a DP World Tour event during the Magical Kenya Open, where he also recorded Uganda’s first-ever hole-in-one at that level. Now, he enters the Open with renewed confidence.
“I’m constantly pushing to improve and compete at the highest level,” he said.
“This partnership with Johnnie Walker fits perfectly because we share the same mindset of progress. I’m honored to be the newest Walker.”
With defending champion John Dayne Moore of Zambia and other top contenders in the field, Rugumayo knows the challenge ahead is steep.
