Safari 7s:Rugby Cranes out of main cup, set for Challenge trophy battle

Uganda’s Rugby Cranes 7s had a rough second day at the Safari 7s in Nairobi, bowing out of Main Cup contention after a string of tough losses that exposed their inexperience and shaky defence.

In three games on Day Two, the Cranes conceded 99 points while scoring just 40, numbers that summed up their struggles.

Their defence was the main weakness, with missed tackles proving costly time and again.

Against KCB Rugby alone, five missed tackles led directly to tries in a 40–14 defeat.

The same story played out against Nyati and Shogun, leaving Uganda bottom of their pool and out of the Main Cup race.

The team will now turn their focus to the Challenge Trophy, where they face Apache at 11:18 a.m.

Still, there’s important context. This squad includes five debutants and three players returning after years away from the team.

Preparation time was short, just three weeks, and that lack of buildup clearly showed.

Though the players were drawn from the top performers in the National 7s Series, the step up to international level proved much steeper than expected.
