The 2025 USSSA Badminton Championship, hosted at Mbale Secondary School, has reached a thrilling crescendo as the tournament heads into its final stage on Tuesday, May 13.
With the excitement amplified by an increase in participating schools this year, the championship has been nothing short of electric and not without surprises.
Among the most talked-about stories of the tournament is the meteoric rise of Seroma Christian High School, the dark horse that has rattled the pecking order and proven themselves against some of Uganda’s most seasoned badminton giants.
Making their unusual buzz in the tournament, Seroma’s remarkable performance across both the boys’ and girls’ categories has sent a clear message: they are here to stay.
What makes Seroma’s breakout run even more compelling is the strategic edge they gained by recruiting nearly the entire badminton squad previously fielded by Progressive SS.
They showed experience and cohesion as they stormed through the group stages and into the semifinals with precision and poise.
In the girls’ semifinals, Seroma Christian High School gave Kakungulu Memorial a run for their money in the early rounds, but their dream was cut short by a resilient Rubaga Girls, who edged them out with a commanding performance.
Meanwhile, defending champions Mbogo High School displayed their dominance once again by defeating Mariam High School, setting up a blockbuster repeat of last year’s FEASSSA final against Rubaga Girls.
The boys’ category delivered equal drama. Seroma’s boys fought gallantly but were narrowly edged out by Kibuli SS, a team known for its tradition of excellence in racket sports.
On the other side of the draw, Kinaawa High School – Kawempe sealed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Kakungulu Memorial in one of the tournament’s most closely contested matches.
As the dust settles from the semifinals, all eyes now turn to the championship matches. Mbogo High School and Rubaga Girls, last year’s regional finalists, will clash once again in what promises to be a fiercely contested girls’ final.
On the boys’ side, Kibuli SS will face Kinaawa High School – Kawempe, each team hungry to etch their name into USSSA history. All finals are slated for Tuesday, May 13, at Mbale SS.
