Uganda National Men’s Basketball Team, the Silverbacks, have appointed Bosnian coach Goran Lojo as head coach as they prepare for a demanding stretch of international competition.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA) confirmed Lojo’s appointment this week, bringing to an end George Galanopolous’ five year spell in charge, a period that saw the team compete regularly on the continental stage.
Lojo brings a wealth of international experience from club and national team basketball in Europe.
His standout achievement came with the Bosnia and Herzegovina women’s national team, which he led to a fifth-place finish at the 2021 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket before guiding them to their first-ever qualification for the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
Uganda is familiar ground for the Bosnian tactician. He previously worked with the Gazelles, overseeing a training camp in Germany ahead of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers, giving him an early understanding of the country’s basketball setup.
His attention now turns to the Silverbacks’ immediate task, the first round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers, scheduled for February 26 to March 1.
Uganda will take on Egypt, Angola and Mali, with the games expected to be played in Cairo or Alexandria.
