Sommet Basketball Club shook up the National Basketball League with a gripping 90-87 overtime win over defending champions City Oilers at a packed Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday night.

Fataki Nyembo led the charge with a monster double-double, 37 points and 16 rebounds as Sommet held their nerve to pull off a statement win.

Sommet started hot, with John Focus Teko’s buzzer-beater giving them a 29-18 lead at the end of the first quarter. But the Oilers regrouped, trimming the gap to 44-39 by halftime.

The third quarter was a tug-of-war, capped by Joseph Chuma’s long-range buzzer-beater to bring the Oilers within four (65-61). In a tense final stretch, Nyembo calmly sank free throws to tie the game at 78 and force overtime.

Sommet edged the champions 12-9 in overtime, with Kasereka Tembo scoring 17 and Peter Cheng adding 15 to support Nyembo’s heroics.

Chuma paced the Oilers with 20 points and 15 rebounds, but his efforts couldn’t stop Sommet’s charge.

Head coach Albert Aciko praised his team’s execution. “We knew Oilers would clog the paint, so the plan was to get Frank [Nyembo] attacking the basket. In overtime, we stayed composed, made smart decisions and Frank delivered again.”

Sommet captain Mark Ngobi was all smiles after the final buzzer. “Beating the champions means something. We’re in this title race.”

Elsewhere, UCU Canons edged JKL Dolphins 66-59, while Namuwongo Blazers stayed unbeaten with an 80-70 win over Rez Life Saints, avenging UCU’s earlier defeat to the Saints.
