With a firm sense of national pride and hope for the future of sports in Uganda, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among flagged off Team Uganda this morning ahead of the highly anticipated CAF African Schools Football Championship in Accra, Ghana.

The championship, set to take place from April 23 to 26, will see Uganda’s top school teams, St. Noa Girls School and St. Mary’s Kitende, compete for continental glory and a share of the $300,000 prize pool.

In a spirited address during the send-off ceremony, Speaker Among not only encouraged the young players to carry the Ugandan flag high but also pledged the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing sports through talent identification and infrastructural development.

“I urge you to maintain the spirit of pan Africanism, discipline and professionalism at the games,” she said, addressing the visibly excited student-athletes.

“Our government will continue to support sports, especially by identifying talent early and investing in the infrastructure needed to help it grow.”

Speaker Among emphasized that Parliament remains committed to prioritizing sports financing, recognizing its pivotal role in youth development, unity and national identity.

She also took a moment to appreciate the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for their tireless work in shaping the sports landscape in the country.

“I thank FUFA for playing an important role in sports development,” she said.

“Let us continue to nurture our players right from secondary schools and grow them up to the national team.”

Representing Uganda in the tournament are the talented girls from St. Noa Girls School and the formidable boys from St. Mary’s Kitende, both powerhouses in school football.

The competition will feature eight countries, all vying not only for glory but for substantial financial rewards: $300,000 for the winner, $200,000 for the runners-up, and $150,000 for the third-best team.

For the young athletes, this moment is more than just a game. It’s a chance to represent their country, schools and dreams on an international stage.

“I just want to say we are ready for the upcoming Games ahead of us, which is going to take place in Ghana,” said Aketowanga Giovanna Sunday, captain of St. Noa Girls School.

“I want to assure the fans that I believe in my teammates. I know my players are going to make it to the championship.”

Her confidence reflects not only the readiness of the team but also the immense gratitude they carry for the support behind their journey.

“I want to thank each and every one who is contributing to our traveling to Ghana, especially our principal,” she added with heartfelt appreciation.
