Uganda Cranes midfielder Joel Sserunjogi has called Saturday’s CHAN 2024 quarterfinal against Senegal at Namboole Stadium a “do-or-die” battle as the team eyes a historic semifinal spot.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the KCCA midfielder stressed the need for focus and precision.
“First and foremost, we thank the Almighty for bringing us this far,” Sserunjogi said.
“Our game tomorrow against Senegal is a do-or-die fixture for us, and we expect a game with no errors.”
Sserunjogi returns after serving a one-match suspension that kept him out of Monday’s dramatic 3-3 draw with South Africa, which secured Uganda’s place in the last eight.
He also explained why several players kissed the VAR monitor after the game, calling it a show of unity and relief.
“I was among the players who kissed the VAR because we work as a team, and everyone was happy to qualify,” he said.
Despite the stakes, the 23-year-old insists the Cranes remain calm and confident, banking on home advantage.
“Even with a game of this magnitude, there is no pressure on us because we are at home,” he added.
Sserunjogi, wearing shirt number 23, has been one of Uganda’s standout players in the tournament co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Praised for his tireless work rate, sharp passing, and commanding presence in midfield, he also scored a stunning goal against Niger earlier in the competition.
