Basketball legend Steven Omony, arguably Uganda’s greatest of all time is our star ⭐️ of the day.

Born in the early 1980s, the former Silverbacks captain drew inspiration from American superstar Magic Johnson, and was introduced to the game at St Leo’s College, Kyegobe. Omony also played for Kitante Hill School.

Omony had brief spells with Blue Jackets (1997) and Falcons (1998-2000), leading the latter to back-to-back league titles including their first ever before moving abroad for a professional stint.

In 2009, Steven Omony returned home after a his pro stint with PLS Hawks in Seychelles with whom he won 4 league titles.

By virtue of being the best player at the time, he was a hot property but there were just two suitors: Kyambogo Warriors and his former side Mogas Falcons.

When Steven Omony “joined” Warriors

Omony had an agreement in principle with Warriors supremo Ambrose Tashobya to join the Kyambogo-based side and he did, prompting Ronnie Kasewu to give up his favourite shirt number 12, for the returning star.

The star forward played a preseason game for Warriors against Power wearing the number 12 jersey but that was the last game he played for Warriors!

A few days later, Omony was announced by Falcons in a two-year deal that was reported to be worth a jaw dropping Ugx 72 million.

Warriors switched their focus elsewhere signing Omony’s rival from Seychelles Abdullah Ramathan aka Dullah and Kenyan forward Martin Okwako.

Coincidentally, the two sides faced off in that year’s finals and Warriors won their first championship.

Amid financial challenges and a thigh injury in 2012, Omony stayed with the Falcons until 2017 when he joined the City Oilers’ juggernaut, with whom he has won the 3 NBL titles.

The veteran’s time with the Oilers has been plagued by injury and the pandemic lockdowns.

Throughout his many years of dunking, sweating, dislocating fingers and twisting knees, the eloquent Omony always dazzled and has won a total of nine league titles, Zone V Championship, and several MVP gongs in between.

This means more!
