BUL FC’s chase for silverware has hit turbulent waters after the FUFA Disciplinary Panel handed down heavy sanctions to head coach Abbey Kikomeko and two key players following a stormy Uganda Cup quarterfinal exit against Kitara FC.

The quarterfinal clash, played on April 20, ended with BUL losing 1-0 to Kitara. But it was what unfolded off the pitch that has now taken center stage.

Frustrated by the officiating, head coach Abbey Kikomeko lashed out verbally and physically towards match officials. A video that later surfaced on social media captured the coach assaulting a steward before kickoff, further fueling the disciplinary fire.

On Friday evening, FUFA confirmed a six-month suspension for Kikomeko from all football-related activities, effective immediately.

He will also pay a fine of UGX 5 million with only six league matches left in the season, BUL FC must now find a way to navigate the final stretch without their head coach’s leadership starting with a tough away fixture against Wakiso Giants on April 26.

The troubles didn’t end with Kikomeko as two BUL players, Walter Ochora and Nicholas Mwere have also been handed match bans for their aggressive confrontations with referee Henry Musisi during the same match.

Ochora, who pushed the official, has been banned for 10 matches and fined UGX 1 million.

Mwere, initially handed a 10-match ban, had his suspension reduced to eight games after admitting to the charge, offering an apology and showing remorse.

He’ll also serve an additional automatic suspension due to the red card he received in the match. His fine also stands at UGX 1 million.

The sanctions leave BUL FC in a precarious position as they attempt to maintain momentum in the Uganda Premier League.
