Take It With Open Hands – Okello calls on Cranes to rise on big stage

Allan Okello spoke with the quiet clarity of a player who understands the moment he is living.

As Uganda Cranes prepare for a must win Group C clash against Tanzania at the Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat, the Vipers forward reminded everyone just how rare this stage is.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Okello said at Friday’s pre-match press conference. “Every player has to take it with open hands.”

For Okello, AFCON is both demanding and rewarding. He acknowledged the pressure of representing the nation but stressed that the spotlight also brings a chance few players ever get, to test themselves against the continent’s best.

“It is the biggest tournament in Africa,” he said. “There is pressure, but there is also opportunity. It’s a big stage for me to show what I can do.”

Uganda’s tournament has not started as hoped. A defeat to Tunisia in their Group C opener left the Cranes bottom of a group that also includes Nigeria and Tanzania, tightening the margins for survival. Okello admitted mistakes were made, but believes they can be corrected.

“We didn’t do well in the last game,” he said. “But we learn from our mistakes. We just need to fix a few simple things to win the next one.”

Saturday’s East African derby now feels decisive. Victory would breathe life into Uganda’s campaign; another loss could all but end it.

Uganda face Tanzania in their second Group C match on Saturday, December 27, with kick-off at 8:30pm in Rabat.
